5 anti-aging tips you can start trying right now to boost your visage!

Skin Therapy  Have you ever thought “My skin needs a therapist?”  That was the title of a recent article I read as I was having a much-coveted beauty day of my own! I think they hit the nail on the head though. It sounds crazy but the catchy punch line has a lot of truth to it. Feelings DO show up on your skin! So while this new idea in Western dermatology of combining skin care with psychiatry (psycho-dermatology…for real) is a revelation that is taking off, those of us on the Eastern side have always known that the mind, body, spirit connection can’t be separated into easy piles. The face is inseparable with the body & our emotions. Think of the Liver line between the eyebrows, the surprise lines on the forehead, the circles under the eyes that relate to the kidneys, or the frown lines that sometimes develop with grief.  Ever get embarrassed & turn bright red? Get frustrated & see the wrinkle increase between the eyes? Been under too much stress & notice your skin looking dull? Or maybe you went through a trying event & later look in the mirror to wonder did that experience suck me dry? Some of this can be explained by the cortisol released during a fight or flight moment. While we need the hormones released in these moments for survival, when cortisol & other stress hormones get pumped out daily & are chronically elevated for months, you start to see that on your face. Both in the brightness of the skin or the increased wrinkles. Cortisol breaks down collagen, triggers inflammation,...

FEBRUARY BEAUTY TIP ROSE

Beauty Tip of the Month (for the month of LOVE) Méi guī huā or Rose is the universal symbol of love & friendship. But in Chinese medicine, it is more than just the carrier of romance & love. It has many medicinal uses that have been known for centuries. Its mild nature makes it ideal for nourishing the liver, refreshing the stomach, promoting the circulation of Qi & blood, & unblocking stagnation. Its aromatic nature opens the heart (there are actual studies that show it has a protective effect against myocardial infarction). It helps to sooth the mood & ease fatigue. Méi guī huā also improves the...
Conscious Beauty is more than skin deep.

Conscious Beauty is more than skin deep.

Conscious BeautyTM, as we discussed last month, is made up of all the daily health choices we make from diet, to lifestyle, to what products we buy. All these choices end up affecting our health & get reflected on our skin & face. I am a huge proponent of natural, organic skincare. I want to take a few minutes to tell you why! When I talk about organic skincare, I am referring to products that are made of plant-derived & naturally occurring ingredients. That means these are grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, GMO, etc. They are also not manufactured with harmful preservatives. Organic products are not only much better for our ecosystem, by protecting our water & soil & reducing pollution, but they are also better for us. High-quality ingredients mean superior products, that don’t aggravate our skin or pollute our bodies. We spend a lot of time choosing healthy foods to put into our bodies to produce optimal health. Your skin needs good “food” just like our bodies. Just like cooking, the better ingredients the better the soup!  We need to have the same focus or even more on the products we put on our skin. In Japanese Meridian Therapy the Lung organ is active in the Fall & is responsible for the collecting, purifying, & descending functions of the body. Our skin is considered the largest organ in our body, responsible for helping us breathe, protecting us from toxins, & managing our water pathways. Keeping our skin healthy means a better defense to our environment & pathogens we encounter. Here in Arizona, where...

Organic Beauty

Beauty in any form takes you out of your head & into your heart. You don’t need to think about something beautiful. It just is. It reaches you on a different level. Certain aromas, visual representations, or a song create highways in our brain that lead us to compassion, gratitude, & joy. Every time we make a new pathway in our brain we open ourselves up & create space for new ideas or patterns to form. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, is often depicted with roses at her feat & around her head. The rose has a beautiful aroma that gives almost everyone pause as they drink it in. Each petal laying on top of each other & open in its own spiral dance. As it blooms it shows you a beautiful, bright center. When we encounter these beautiful blooms it is almost impossible not to pause & drink them in.  Acupuncture is based on the idea that stuck qi, or energy, causes disease. Trauma lives in our bodies, in our blood & bones. The trauma sits there & incubates over time & gives rise to mental, emotional, & physical problems. To resolve & release the trauma we first need to manipulate the physical body. A physical detox so to speak. Acupuncture helps to move the stuck energy of the body so that blood may flow easier & healing can occur.  In Asian medicine the 7 emotions that are associated with disease are anger, joy, worry, pensiveness, grief, fear, & fright. Each organ in the body has a mental, emotional, & spiritual function. When emotions are repressed or prolonged,...
Conscious Beauty

Conscious Beauty

Conscious Beauty Conscious Beauty is on its simplest level a choice we all get to make every day. It is the food choices we make, our lifestyle choices, the products we buy, how we treat others, our emotional breadth, our daily health. It is the daily choices that we make to cultivate Good Qi. Conscious Beauty is our emotional balance, our physical health, our commitment to ethical living, & the unity of the human spirit. All this ends up reflected on our organic calling card to each other…our face! Health is a Daily Activity! Your face is a physical & emotional map made of hundreds of little moments stored on the face. Each line & wrinkle carries energy & its own vibration. Our joy, sadness, challenges are all channeled back to us. Our brain has the ability to store emotional memories as a way of protecting us from future dramas. This defense mechanism is instinctive & while sometimes beneficial, can also cause us to live reactively instead of consciously. Bringing these patterns into our awareness means we can release them & live a life with greater emotional breadth. Beliefs that are unconscious can still be manifested as illness. Wrinkles are not an inevitable consequence of getting older. Our face becomes the repository of over work, poor sleep, emotional trauma, etc. Over time these influences change our facial landscape. In Asian medicine we talk about a person “Shen” or spirit that is reflected in the eyes & face. It is in part a reflection of our emotional state. When we are calm, balanced, & harmonious we see a vibrancy...

Embrace Your Inner Goddess!

Embracing Your Inner Goddess   Facial renewal acupuncture isn’t just for entertainment professionals. We all have a desire to put our best face forward! This desire isn’t just about looking younger, it is about feeling vital & confident about ourselves. As the medi-spas offer more & more outlandish & questionable beauty enticements, you may ask, “How can I feel & look refreshed, healthy & vibrant, without undergoing the knife or syringe?” By using ancient beauty ‘secrets’ from Asia you can unlock your own body’s power to heal & adapt to the aging process. Constitutional Facial Renewal is ancient wisdom with a modern twist. The face is a mirror for everything happening inside our body & mind. And the muscles of the face are both highly vascular, small, & amenable to change. By combining a constitutional body treatment aimed at correcting organ imbalances that show up on the face, & facial acupuncture protocols specifically designed to lift, smooth, & tone facial muscles, you unlock renewed facial vitality. The process of facial renewal promotes a healing cascade that facilitates increased micro-circulation & oxygen supply to the skin & the skin’s soothing agents. Detoxification is encouraged & the precursors to collagen & elastin are triggered, giving improved firmness, elasticity, reduced lines & a healthier completion & texture. As results accumulate the body remembers & holds the results longer & longer.
