Happy Year of the Dog! That’s right it is the Chinese New Year & we have just transitioned from the year of the Red Rooster to the year of the Yellow or Earth Dog. How does this Chinese New Year work? The Chinese calendar rotates in 60-year cycles based on 12 animal years and five element years — wood, fire, earth, metal and water. 2018 is the Year of the Yellow Earth Dog. We will officially celebrate the arrival of the Yellow Dog on February 16th!

If you are a Dog person like me, you will agree with the Chinese who consider the Dog to be good luck. And anyone who cares for & loves dogs will get a little extra luck this year! (WOOF!) It seems only fitting that in celebration of this cycle change, Shindai Acupuncture is moving to West Sedona right next to the Golden Bone & Sunshine Animal Clinic. An auspicious move to be sure… or in Sedona speak we call this “woo-woo”, right?
The past 2 years have been fiery & sometimes the tension & unpredictability of these years has been overwhelming. So the Earth Dog is a welcome change bringing some calm relief. Earth is a grounding & supporting energy, & if you are one of my clients you know how I feel about supporting the Earth element! In Chinese Medicine, the Earth Element involves the Earth Organs of the Body – the Spleen, Stomach & Pancreas. This is generally considered to be a good year for health & wellness. Be on the watch out for digestive disorders this year- overeating, esophageal reflux, diabetes, & other blood sugar disorders are challenges to be mindful of in this year of the Dog. Since the spleen is responsible for holding the blood- blood clots & other blood related issues could rear their ugly heads. The immune system is part of the Earth element & keeping it strong will be important throughout the year. As we have already seen, this flu season has been a trial to many and touted as one of the worst in history.
Worry & over-thinking are the emotions associated with the Earth element & these may plague many this year. Remember much of what we worry about never comes to pass. Calm the mind with meditation, exercise, present moment awareness, and, of course, acupuncture will be even more important this year.
Working collaboratively & forming partnerships that are cooperative are supported this year as the Dog is a pack animal & used to working in a way that sustains the group. Generosity, kindness, & empathy are some of the other themes of the Dog. Seek out relationships that strengthen your personal Earth with the traits that are prevalent in the year of the Dog.
A successful and joyful year is in store for you. Hug your dog and spread the love.
